Matthias Church

The tiled roof everyone photographs from the Bastion next door, and an interior unlike any other church in the city.

What it costs

Ticketed to go in, and modest. The exterior — which is the part that appears in photographs — costs nothing.

It remains a working church, so it closes to visitors during services and for weddings, which happen often here.

When to go

Combine it with the Bastion; they share a small square and separating them wastes a walk. Mornings before the coaches, as everywhere on this hill.

Getting there

Bus 16 to Castle Hill, or up from Batthyany ter (metro M2).

If you only have an hour

Twenty minutes inside is enough to take in the painted walls. Spend the rest on the streets behind — the Castle District empties out one block back from the church, and the small squares there are the quietest part of Buda.

What people get wrong

The famous roof is Zsolnay tile from the nineteenth-century rebuild, not medieval work. Inside is the surprise: the walls are painted top to bottom in geometric patterns that read as more Ottoman than Gothic — a deliberate nineteenth-century interpretation of Hungary’s own history, and the reason the interior is worth the ticket.
