Margaret Island

A car-free park in the middle of the river — free, large, and the answer to a hot afternoon or a day when the centre is full.

What it costs

Free. The island is a public park and there is no gate.

Individual things on it are ticketed — the Palatinus open-air baths, the small zoo, bike and pedal-cart hire — but the park, the paths and the ruins cost nothing.

When to go

Summer is when it earns its keep: shade, water and a breeze off the river. The musical fountain at the southern end runs to a timetable through the warmer months. The running track that circles the island is rubberised and used seriously by locals.

Getting there

Trams 4 and 6 stop on Margaret Bridge, in the middle of the river, and a stair takes you straight down onto the island. That is the trick — you do not have to walk on from either bank.

If you only have an hour

Take tram 4 or 6 to the bridge stop, come down the stair at the southern tip, and walk north as far as the water tower. That is about half the island, it is flat, and it is the part with the ruins and the fountain.

What people get wrong

It is not a manicured garden. There are medieval convent ruins in the middle of it, a water tower you can climb, and long stretches of ordinary grass. Treat it as a park a city actually uses rather than a sight to be ticked off, and it is one of the best afternoons in Budapest.
