Free. It is a public square and it is always open.
The buildings on either side — the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle — are ticketed and are genuine museums rather than viewpoints.
When to go
Any time. It is exposed, so it is hot in summer and cold in winter with nothing to shelter behind. It empties in the evening and is lit.
Getting there
Metro M1 to Hosok tere. The line runs the length of Andrassy Avenue, so you can walk the avenue one way and ride back.
If you only have an hour
Do not stand in it for an hour. Cross into the City Park behind it, walk to Vajdahunyad Castle, and loop back past the baths. That is the whole of the M1’s far end in an hour, all of it free except the water.
What people get wrong
The colonnade is often read as a list of kings. It is the Millennium Monument, put up for the thousandth anniversary of the Magyar arrival, and the figures have been changed more than once as governments changed — Habsburgs removed and replaced after 1945. What you are looking at is a nineteenth-century monument edited by the twentieth.
