Gellert Baths - Access Budapest

The other great bath house, and the more beautiful one — Art Nouveau, tiled, and considerably smaller than Szechenyi.

What it costs

Ticketed, on the same shape of pricing as Szechenyi: dearer at the weekend, locker or cabin decided at the counter.

The baths and the hotel building they sit in are run separately, and the hotel has spent long periods closed for renovation while the baths kept working. Do not assume one being shut means the other is.

When to go

Smaller than Szechenyi and it feels it when busy — the main indoor hall is a fixed size and a coach party fills it. Mornings on a weekday are the difference between a spa and a swimming lesson.

Getting there

Trams 19, 41, 47 and 49 and metro M4 to Szent Gellert ter, at the Buda end of Liberty Bridge.

If you only have an hour

Look at the entrance hall, which you can do without a ticket, then walk out onto Liberty Bridge — green, ironwork, and the best bridge in the city to be standing on. Cross to the Pest side and you are at the Great Market Hall.

What people get wrong

Most visitors pick between the two baths on price. The real difference is character: Szechenyi is grand, outdoors and sociable; Gellert is an interior — mosaic, stained glass, columns — and is the one to choose if the building matters to you as much as the water.
