One day is enough to see why people come back, if you spend it on the free half of the city and do not try to add a bath.
The shape of the day
Budapest’s centre is small and flat on the Pest side, and the single best day here costs almost nothing. Walk the river, cross a bridge, go up the hill by bus, and come down on foot.

Morning — Pest, along the water
Start at Parliament from the outside; the building is the photograph and the tour needs a booked slot you will not have on a one-day trip. Walk south along the embankment to the Shoes on the Danube Bank — five minutes, standing still — and continue to the Chain Bridge.
If you would rather ride than walk, tram 2 runs this whole stretch and is the cheapest sightseeing in the city.

Midday — up the hill, and down it
Cross the bridge and take bus 16 up to Buda Castle on an ordinary transport ticket. The funicular is prettier and costs its own fare.
On top: the castle courtyards, Matthias Church, and the Fisherman’s Bastion, whose lower terraces are free. Then walk down through the Varkert Bazar gardens. Never plan this in reverse.

Afternoon — back across, and the one ticket worth buying
Return to Pest and go up St Stephen’s Basilica. The lift to the panorama terrace is the flattest-effort good view in Budapest, and it is the one small ticket that earns its place on a single day.
From there, Andrassy Avenue runs out to Heroes’ Square. Ride the M1 out and walk back if your legs have gone.
Evening
Cross the Chain Bridge again after dark — it is a different bridge lit — or eat in District VII and look at the Dohany Street Synagogue from the street.
What to skip on one day
The baths. Between queueing, changing, soaking and drying they are a half-day, and squeezed into an hour they are a waste of the ticket. Come back for them. The Parliament interior, unless you booked weeks ago. Margaret Island, which deserves an afternoon of its own.
If your day is a Sunday or a Monday
Neither breaks this plan — almost all of it is outdoors. But the Great Market Hall is shut on Sunday and most state museums are shut on Monday, so do not build a lunch or a gallery around either.
